Marrakech history

The fourth-largest city in Morocco is Marrakesh, also known as Marrakech (/məˈraekɛʃ/ or /ˌmærəˈkɛʃ/;[3] Arabic: مراكش, romanized: murrākuš, pronounced [murraːkuʃ]).[2] It is the center of the Marrakesh-Safi region and one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. The city is located to the west of the Atlas Mountains’ foothills.

Emir Abu Bakr ibn Umar established the city in 1070 as the Almoravid dynasty’s seat. The Almoravids built the city’s first significant buildings and influenced its plan for many generations to come. Built by Ali ibn Yusuf in 1122–1123, the city’s red walls and subsequent red sandstone structures have earned it the nicknames “Ochre City” (ville ocre) and “Red City” (المدينة الحمراء Almadinat alhamra’). Marrakesh expanded quickly.

Service to Marrakesh is offered by the Ménara International Airport as well as the Marrakesh train station, which connects the city to Casablanca and the northern part of Morocco. Cadi Ayyad University is one of Marrakesh’s numerous colleges and universities.
